Intent – Developing Confident and Inspired Writers
At Sacred Heart Primary School, we are passionate about nurturing competent, confident writers who are inspired to express themselves and make their voices heard. Our approach to writing is grounded in the Pathways to Write programme, which follows a Mastery model to support children in acquiring, embedding, and applying essential writing skills.
Each unit of work is centered on high-quality texts and offers a wide range of engaging, purposeful writing opportunities. Skills are developed through structured practice and repetition, enabling children to build confidence, fluency, and pride in their writing. A strong emphasis is placed on broadening vocabulary, with regular opportunities to explore and use ambitious language, reflecting our wider commitment to developing a rich and varied vocabulary across the school.
We believe writing should extend beyond English lessons. Writing opportunities are embedded across the curriculum, allowing children to apply their skills in subjects such as Humanities and Science. A diverse range of genres, purposes, and audiences is explored, helping children to adapt their writing creatively and effectively.
To cater for different learning styles and inspire creativity, we use a wide variety of resources and experiences—including video clips, audio recordings, drama, images, educational visits, visiting speakers, and Talk for Writing strategies. These approaches bring writing to life, ensuring children write for meaningful, real-world purposes whenever possible.
Children are taught to discuss, plan, draft, revise, and edit their work through effective teacher modelling and collaborative peer support. This develops a clear understanding of the writing process and encourages pride in crafting well-structured and purposeful pieces.
Our writing curriculum is closely aligned with Pathways to Read, providing consistency across reading and writing and enabling children to make meaningful connections between texts they encounter and the writing they produce.
At Sacred Heart, we believe that with the right tools and support, every child can turn their ideas into powerful, purposeful writing
English in the Early Years
In our Reception Class, we use Drawing Club to develop the children’s writing skills. This programme, allows our very young children to use their imaginations to make their drawings do magical things. Click on the link below to find out more.

I love drawing club because I get to use my imagination.

I like writing code words.

Drawing club is fun!
