Geography Curriculum Intent
At Sacred Heart, our Geography curriculum is designed to ignite pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world around them. We aim to equip every child with the knowledge, skills, and values to explore the complex relationships between people, places, and environments—locally, nationally, and globally.
We begin by building on each child’s ‘personal geography’, using their lived experiences as a foundation for discovering how the world works and how it is changing. Geography is a vital part of our curriculum because it offers a powerful context for understanding the past, present, and future of our planet and how human choices shape it.
Our curriculum is broad and inclusive, underpinned by a strong commitment to spiritual, moral, social, and cultural (SMSC) development. Through real-world topics, enquiry-based learning, and meaningful discussions, children grow into responsible, thoughtful, and active global citizens.
Spiritual Development
Spirituality in Geography arises through meaningful connections with real people in real places. Children are encouraged to reflect on their own place in the world, to appreciate the beauty and diversity of different environments, and to explore human experiences across the globe. Creative activities—such as designing sustainable communities or exploring the impact of natural disasters—enable children to express imagination, empathy, and wonder.
Moral Development
Geographical enquiry naturally involves ethical questions. Children investigate and debate global issues such as climate change, resource use, and inequality. By exploring a range of perspectives and taking part in role-play and decision-making scenarios, pupils develop empathy, critical thinking, and a strong sense of justice and responsibility.
Social Development
Geography supports pupils’ social growth by encouraging collaboration, communication, and respect for others. Through group projects and shared enquiry, children learn to work effectively as part of a team, listen to differing viewpoints, and solve problems together. They also reflect on how societies function, how communities are shaped, and how people around the world live in different ways.
Cultural Development
Through studying diverse countries, cultures, and environments, children develop an appreciation of the rich variety of life across the globe. They explore how geography influences cultural practices and how interconnected our world has become. Our curriculum celebrates diversity and fosters respect for all communities, both near and far.
Throughout the year, our pupils are given regular opportunities to explore how they can care for the planet and contribute to a sustainable future. Geography at Sacred Heart nurtures informed, compassionate, and curious learners—ready to engage with the world and shape it for the better.
